Background

On July 1, 2026, the City of Tucson tripled its swim lane rental fees from $6 to $18 per hour. These rates are scheduled to climb annually, reaching $30 per lane by 2029. This aggressive price hike severely penalizes local swim teams and sits completely out of line with surrounding Pima County municipalities, which only charge between $3 and $7 per lane. 

Objective

Urge the City of Tucson to reverse the tripling of fees for youth swim teams and keep public pools accessible to all families.

The Problem

Financial Barrier: Tripling practice fees makes competitive swimming unaffordable for many local families.

Informed Exclusion: Lower-income families risk being completely excluded from a healthy, constructive community sport.

Longer Commutes: Teams will be forced to practice at distant private facilities, burdening parents with excessive travel times.

Why It Matters

Public pools provide vital spaces for personal development, discipline, and community safety. No child should be forced out of a sport due to skyrocketing costs, especially during a rising cost-of-living crisis.
