Save Yellow-crowned Night Herons' Nesting Habitat in Biscayne Park

Save Yellow-crowned Night Herons' Nesting Habitat in Biscayne Park
The Issue
In Florida, the Village of Biscayne Park's Yellow-crowned Night Herons were not considered when the Commission voted to remove all 37 Australian Pines (Casuarina) and some lost their rookeries when 29 Pines were cut down, in February of 2025. Biscayne Park is a BIRD SANCTUARY.
These formerly-endangered native birds nest in the same Pines, on the same limbs, each year and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
We'd like to preserve the 8 Australian Pines (Casuarina) left on NE 121st St. through September 2025 (end of nesting season) and have them inspected by an objective arborist or environmental consulting firm to assess their health, so that (if healthy) they may be maintained by pruning and kept indefinitely or until mature, native Miami-Dade Pines are planted throughout the municipality and grow tall enough for the herons to choose them for nesting.
