Wolverton works used to be the most famous railway works on the rail network the work that would come out from behind the great wall use second to none a lot of work staff used to be so proud to work at wolverton.
Opened in 1838 at its height over 4000 staff worked the and even though the site was dirty and dusty and in some shops your overalls would stand up by them self's by Fridays. The pride of the site was still kept the buildings where maintained to a high standard and safe and the external wall along stratford road was maintained.
Even in the late 1980s when the site down sized and the buildings were unused they were still maintained and gutters etc were cleaned.
Since the site was sold to railcare in 1994/5 the state of the site got left. Weeds started to take over the external wall on Stratford road has not been maintained the unused sawmill and smithy stopped being maintained and the buildings started to broken into and windows smashed weeds growing in them. Owner St Modwen seem to not care or be want to do any repairs despite being reported to the health and safety commissioners 3 times. Operators who have been leasing the site through the years Railcare 95-2001 Alstom 2001-2007 Railcare 2007-2013 Knorr bremse 2013-2018 Gemini 2018-Present have all failed to follow the health and safety at work act and keep the site well maintained and safe and this includes the old sawmill and smithy. As of 2019 the state of the site is that bad that the lifting shop roof leaks when it rains the gutters on the buildings are not clear and some are broken, There is weeds growing out of the walls and all over the front and sides of some of the buildings. The wall along Stratford road is missing that much mortar that you can see right through the gaps and you could take out bricks. This issue has been raised with the town council who say has it is private property they can not do anything the main council and the health and safety commissioners have been informed. Some of the external wooden frames and wooden vents are rotten and as for the old sawmill and smithy the state of these buildings in just 9 years is that bad that the sawmill roof is nearly all but collapsed the window are shot the smithy and joiners are also losing their roofs at a shocking rate. I understand this day in age money is a issue but by law this site should be fully maintained by St Modwen the land and building owners and also the tenants who use the buildings. I have to keep telling people the works is not abandoned and is a fully working site but the state of the site makes me look like I am lying.
Why is it no one from the either councils or the owners or tenants have any pride and guts to do something. Kids as young as 6 have been getting into these buildings there their is asbestos around using rope to swing over the collapsing floors.
But the main thing at the min is the works wall I feel it could collapse on some one walking past unless some one gets the balls to sort it.
