Preserve Windmill Farms Equestrian Facility

Updates can be found at bottom of page.

Well here we are again. Some of you may remember signing a petition to support the farm approximately 2 years ago.
The success of that petition where Commerce Township voted 6-1 to give Windmill Farms a 5 year concession agreement was short lived.
In a recent turn of events Commerce has made the devastating decision to prematurely terminate the agreement just 2 years in (2 Covid years might I add). Blindsided is an understatement!
We are in desperate need of your support to keep Windmill Farms Riding Academy open.
As our only public horse farm in Commerce Township and the main provider of school horses for students on equestrian teams that do not have their own horses. This farm run by Carrie Hancock is the backbone of our immediate and surrounding area equine programs. Servicing MIHA District 1 Schools, those include our students at
● Walled Lake Schools ● Huron Valley Schools ● South Lyon Schools ● Novi Schools
● West Bloomfield Schools

Riders of all ages benefit from Carries 30+ seasoned school horses and equipment supply.
Windmill is also where facilitation takes place for several 501(c)(3) non profit organizations such as Detroit Horse Power.
This community equestrian center encompasses a wide variety of disciplines and provides essential education services as well as therapeutic services for community members with physical and mental challenges.
This farm has faithfully served our community even if you are not a rider by
● Giving us the opportunity to connect with agriculture
● Preserving green space
● Minimizing density
● Protecting our watershed
● Controlling noise
● Preserving our water quality
● Connecting us to history
The termination of the current concession would be putting Carrie and over 50 horses out In the dead of winter. This is cruel, reckless and detrimental to the horses themselves. There is not a viable option for this program anywhere else in our community. Their herd will be broken apart.

These horses have served the community and many have called Windmill Farms home for the 17 years Carrie has been there.
The township is in the middle of a new master plan and is looking to make changes. We have soccer fields, baseball fields, pickleball courts. Let's not lose our only public farm that is totally self-sufficient and relies on zero tax dollars.
Voice your support of keeping this successful and renowned operation under the expert direction of Carrie Hancock, by signing this petition, writing letters and phoning Commerce Township board members.
