Save Wildlife - Remove Fencing from bike trails

Save Wildlife - Remove Fencing from bike trails
The Issue
We are petitioning the FDOT to remove the fencing on the bike trail along Coastal Highway 98 in Wakulla County. Everyone, citizens of Wakulla County and visitors, appreciate the ease of access to the coast that the highway affords. Likewise bike trails are beneficial to the community in that both cyclists and pedestrians can enjoy the fresh air and beauty of nature while exercising. The fencing, however, along portions of the bike trail are not only unnecessary, they are detrimental to wildlife populations. Local wildlife conservation experts have warned that turtles can't get through the fencing and are dying. Just this week a large female otter was struck by a vehicle because it appears she wasn't able to get through the fence to the marshes. My argument is that we should be able to utilize and enjoy the roads and trails without causing much harm to wildlife. With the removal of the fencing and lower guard rails, we can ensure that local wildlife has as much access as possible to their natural habitats. They are a vital and beautiful part of our ecosystems that we should protect. This action would help to preserve the natural beauty of our coast for future generations.
