SAVE Westport Light State Park-STOP Commercialization & Destruction of Wetlands
The Issue
Constructing a golf course and all its amenities, including lodging, a clubhouse, retail store, restaurants, and concessions throughout Westport Light State Park, will destroy the precious wetlands and its habitats (previously entrusted to a land covenant) while also encroaching on Washington's best, most consistent surf break in the state. This is not just land; it's a sanctuary for the vibrant wildlife and a haven for surfers & beach goers from all over who cherish sharing waves and the peaceful nature that surrounds them, that have been part of Westport's identity since the beginning of its time.
Westport Light State Park is home to the second largest area of rare interdunal wetlands of its kind in the State of Washington. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declared it as an Aquatic Resource of National Importance. It is a priceless natural resource, not just for the residents of Westport, but for visitors from around the globe who come here to enjoy a multitude of activities including but not limited to beachcombing, fishing and surfing, all while being surrounded by its rich biodiversity.
The proposed golf course development threatens to irreparably damage the fragile ecosystem by clearing & filling HUNDREDS OF ACRES of wetlands uplands and forest as well as administering large amounts of pesticides and fertilizers continuously for regular maintenance of the golf course, annihilating the habitat that supports numerous species and altering the natural landscape that has been protected for future generations to enjoy.
Statistics have shown that once these ecosystems are disturbed, they cannot be fully restored. Wetlands across the US have been declining at an alarming rate, with over 50% already lost in the lower 48 states. This trend has led to disastrous environmental consequences, impacting both the local wildlife and climate change resilience.
Moreover, the surf breaks in Westport are a critical part of Washington's unique cultural and sporting heritage, providing recreation for countless locals and tourists alike. Altering their natural surroundings with construction & development of sprawling business will disrupt the delicate oceanic and coastal systems as well as directly impact the surf community, leading to a loss of this beloved amenity as we know it and negatively impact the community's economy reliant on tourism.
Water quality will also dramatically decrease from all the inevitable hazardous chemical runoff from the proposed golf course, posing huge risks to surfers, beachgoers, as well as Westport's commercial fishing community who will also be negatively affected by this water quality issue.
There are alternative locations that can be considered for the golf course development that wouldn't endanger sensitive environmental areas and which would respect the town's natural assets and long-standing traditions.
We urge Washington State Parks to reconsider the development plans and to preserve Westport Light State Park as it is: a sanctuary of nature, surfing, and community life. Please sign this petition to stop this ill-conceived construction and protect our vital natural and recreational resources for present and future generations.
