Save west burton power station towers and chimneys from demolition
The Issue
It was recently announced that west burton power stations cooling towers and two chimneys are going to be destroyed wiping out symbols of our industrial heritage. I strongly oppose this and urge people living in and around the area to sign my petition to save them before it’s too late. The towers of west burton especially the two chimneys have become a landmark to the north Nottinghamshire area and symbols of what had kept the lights on in our homes for decades. We need to preserve these buildings as a memory of our industrial past just like we did with windmills and kilns. West burton has been a beacon and deserves to remain for this reason. Invite you to get behind me to send a strong message and support efforts to prevent the demolition of these wonderful structures.
Surely it could be possible to retain some of the towers and integrate them into the new plans for the site? Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.
Just like mill chimneys, smock windmills and gasholders before them, cooling towers are now passing into history. Redundant relics of our industrial heritage, that have gradually become part of the Nottinghamshire landscape.
As the carbon age is ending and the sustainable age begins, it’s important we retain some of our past, to remember where we’ve come from and point the way to our future.
i have lived in the area of the power station all my life and they have always symbolised home to me especially the twin chimneys. Even keeping the chimneys will be a good thing as a tribute to the former coal fired power station as well as to the wonderful workers who have kept it going all these years, not to mention the engineering that went into building the chimneys and towers. It is understandable that times are changing but it is equally as important that we retain some of these structures as monuments to our industrial past.
twin chimneys
the two massive chimneys have stood over the area since the 60s and the area would be unrecognisable without them. Even just keeping them would be a great way of maintaining the memory of the coal age. They have been a beacon of the area and can be seen for many miles. They symbolise a great industrial heritage as well as a beacon of the area.
please support this campaign with as many people as you can, if you know anyone who has worked at the power station please let them know about this petition.
Thank you for your support
