Save Video Visions! VHS Library in Chatham, NY
The Issue
Save Video Visions!
Founded in 1985 by Steve Campbell and a partner, Video Visions VHS Rental Library boasts a collection of over 25,000 movies, many of which are out of print and never made it to digital media. This store is deeply treasured by the local community and the movie lover community at large.
The building was just sold to new owners without a plan to continue the store. It is of the utmost importance that we demonstrate now that this place is loved and would be missed. We hope that a vast demonstration of support highlights the need for a legacy plan and the preservation of the building and collection.
The store hasn’t changed much since the heyday of VHS. It’s a wormhole to simpler times. The love Steve poured into the place still reverbs in its walls. Please help us preserve physical media and community third places like this that give small towns life. Video Rental stores across the country have shuttered one by one and theaters along with them. The digital age forgoes physical gathering places that celebrate movies and bring together the people who love them. This collection has been cultivated with love and should be preserved in kind. Steve notoriously didn’t collect only by his interests, but what the people of Chatham were asking to see. It is in many ways an archive of us. We would love to see the building preserved as is and made into an archive available to the public.
Your signature can’t secure Video Visions' future, but it can make room for conversation, a loving end to this iteration of this treasured institution, and with luck, forge a way for a new one. Sign today, show us how much you love old movies and the people who dedicate their lives to them!
