Dear Supporters,
Thank you again for adding your name to the petition opposing the proposed development at 17100 W Victory Blvd, directly across from Birmingham High School.
I wanted to share a quick update on our progress:
Over the past few weeks, I’ve reviewed all publicly available files related to this project through the Department of City Planning. It has become clear that the project qualified for streamlined approval under the Transit Oriented Communities (TOC) and Executive Directive 1 (ED1) programs. This ministerial process unfortunately bypasses traditional public hearings, environmental reviews, and community input.
However, this fight is far from over.
The project still requires permits and clearance from the Department of Building and Safety, which presents another critical opportunity to raise our voices and ensure community safety is prioritized.
We’re continuing to push hard on the traffic impact concerns—especially the unsafe proximity of the driveway to the Birmingham High crosswalk—as well as the fact that our Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council was never consulted during the approval process. That’s unacceptable.
We also closely watching Councilwoman Imelda Padilla, who now heads Metro’s housing development initiatives. It appears that her new role may be taking precedence over her duties to represent and protect the residents of Lake Balboa. We intend to hold her accountable.
A community meeting will be scheduled soon, and I’ll notify you as soon as details are confirmed. Our message is clear:
We will not allow this project to move forward unchecked and congest our neighborhood without a fight.
Thank you for staying engaged. More updates coming soon.
With determination,
Christine :)
