Save Usask Horticulture Field from Commercial Development

Save Usask Horticulture Field from Commercial Development
The Issue
The Usask horticulture field lab and Patterson arboretum have been more than just a workspace to me; it’s a cornerstone of my professional and personal life. As someone who works in this vibrant research centre, surrounded by dedicated students and a community that values environmental preservation, it's heartbreaking to learn about the proposal to lease out the land to commercial interests. This is not just a plot of land; this is a sanctuary in the middle of the city that provides educational opportunities and environmental benefits that enhance the quality of urban life.
For over 60 years, the Usask horticulture fields, a vital component of the local research infrastructure, have contributed significantly to agricultural research and environmental health. The research done here not only advances academic knowledge but also fosters a sustainable relationship with nature, right in the heart of our community.
The potential lease of this invaluable land threatens not just our local environment, but also the social and educational networks that rely on it. Students who come here to learn and conduct research find themselves amidst an arboretum that is both a classroom and a peaceful retreat. It's an oasis in our urban landscape where citizens come to find solace and create fond memories, a testimony of the city’s commitment to green spaces.
Losing this space to commercial ventures entails not only a loss of greenery but also disregards decades of environmental stewardship. This is an irreplaceable resource that belongs to the community and to future generations.
We believe the leasing decision undermines decades-long efforts towards urban sustainability. We call on Usask properties to reconsider this detrimental proposal and honor their commitment to preserving spaces that serve both our community and the planet. Please sign this petition to urge Usask to keep the horticulture fields available for research, education, and public enjoyment.
