SAVE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH'S RUTHERFORD CONSERVATORY (1930) FROM DEMOLITION

SAVE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH'S RUTHERFORD CONSERVATORY (1930) FROM DEMOLITION
The Issue
What is the significance of this structure?
The Rutherford Conservatory was first built in 1930 and was designed by Lord and Burnham of St. Catharines. It was rebuilt in 1998 and remains a prominent and historic building situated at the heart of UofG’s campus. The conservatory is one of the only remaining examples of the “pagoda” style greenhouse. The structure is emblematic of UofG’s roots and history as Ontario’s Agricultural College (OAC). It is an iconic UofG building that predates the founding of the university as we know it in 1964.
The University of Guelph has applied to demolish the Rutherford Conservatory. On December 10th, 2024, The City of Guelph will decide the fate of this prominent and historic structure.
Can you imagine other world renowned, and globally recognized academic institutions demolishing important, historic, prominent buildings on their campus? When we think of U of T, Dalhousie, Ivy League schools, and British universities, many of us think of rich histories (buildings) that have intentionally been preserved.
The history of a university serves as a foundation for its academic and cultural achievements. The demolition of Rutherford Conservatory will erase a jewel in UofG’s crown. What’s next – The Bull Ring?
