Save Toodyay Road from unnecessary clearing

The issue

We ask Main Roads WA to delay roadwork plans on some sections of Toodyay Road until a cooperative joint planning group have explored a range of alternative options that address road safety and community concerns about the clearing footprint and impact on the heritage, scenic and environmental values of Toodyay Road.

Toodyay Road is a beautiful scenic route that takes you from Perth to the heritage town of Toodyay. Many locals and tourists enjoy the journey to and from Perth, citing "I love seeing the trees in flower"; "The winding scenic drive full of beautiful big trees and long shadows. The feeling of a country drive."; "The beautiful views - the tree covered hills and the wildflowers in Spring".

The environmental policy of the State Labor Party states that WA Labor believes that our unique and endangered wildlife and remarkable landscapes are a central part of our State’s heritage, and important to our culture and identity of West Australians. As such we believe it is our responsibility to protect it for future generations”.

Main Roads WA (MRWA) is currently upgrading Toodyay Road. The current plan is to clear 57 hectares of vegetation along a 27 km stretch from Dryandra Road to the Toodyay townsite. SASTR challenges some of these design plans, in particular, the Salt Valley Road intersection where 22.18 hectares (updated from 13.61 hectares  as previously thought 22/10/2022) of vegetation will be removed in conjunction with a proposal to lower the road at the intersection by 12 metres, and ask them to consider alternative methods to improving the safety of Toodyay Road through reduced clearing footprints.

Located on the corner of the flora designated Salt Valley road with Toodyay Road, are 400+ year-old Powderbark Wandoos that are threatened under the current plan.  These are historic trees of significant heritage value in that they were growing before the first European explorers set foot on Australian soil. They are also important in providing various sized habitat hollows, only beginning to form after 150 years. Black cockatoos, an endangered species, rely on such trees. Along this flora designated road are stunning and bountiful wildflowers, such as Blue Leschenaultia and Flame pea, among many others. This is an extremely popular road for tourism operators.
