Save Theatre at Apex Thales Middle School
Save Theatre at Apex Thales Middle School
The Issue
The theater program at Thales Academy has always been more than just a class. It’s been a sanctuary—a space where shy students found their voice, where newcomers found community, and where creativity turned into confidence. Under the incredible leadership of Ms. Jaffe, theater has been a home for so many of us—a place to grow, to belong, and to be seen.
Now, that space is being threatened.
We’ve learned that due to budgeting decisions, the dedicated theater teacher position—held by Ms. Jaffe—is being removed. The plan is to either merge theater with another elective or hand it off to a different teacher without theater expertise. Either way, the program we know and love will not be the same.
This decision ignores the powerful impact theater has had on students’ well-being, mental health, and personal development. It’s not just about putting on plays—it’s about building confidence, teaching empathy, encouraging collaboration, and creating a safe space for self-expression.
Theater isn’t an “extra.” For many of us, it’s essential.
Research shows that arts education leads to stronger academic performance, improved critical thinking, and lower dropout rates. Theater also nurtures social-emotional skills that are vital for student success—not just in school, but in life.
Removing the theater teacher and diluting the program sends a damaging message: that the arts—and the students who depend on them—aren’t a priority.
We urge the Thales Academy administration and founder Robert Luddy to reconsider this decision. Protecting the integrity of the theater program by preserving the dedicated teacher role is an investment in our students’ futures. This isn’t just about arts education—it’s about student growth, community, and mental health.
Please sign and share this petition to support the continuation of a full, meaningful theater program led by a qualified teacher. Help us preserve a space that has inspired, healed, and empowered so many.
