Save the Ymir Community Waste Disposal Site
The Issue
I am writing to express my concern and opposition to the RDCK's plan to remove the waste disposal site located within our community. As a resident and taxpayer, I understand the critical importance of this facility to our everyday lives.
For years, this waste disposal site has served as a convenient and environmentally responsible solution for the people in our community. Having easy access to a local facility helps ensure waste is disposed of correctly, reducing the chances of illegal dumping and keeping our streets clean. Illegal dumping will attract more wildlife to the area putting residents and their pets at risk and becoming a growing safety issue within the community. Without this site, we will also be forced to travel to Salmo or Nelson, significantly increasing the distance we would need to cover, which poses numerous issues.
Firstly, the removal of the local waste disposal site would mean more waste could inadvertently fall from our vehicles as we travel longer distances. This would not only litter our roads but could also pose safety hazards to other drivers and become a burdensome environmental issue. Moreover, the increase in travel distance to dispose of waste adds unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions, contradicting our community’s efforts to contribute to a more sustainable environment.
Furthermore, the financial implications for individuals making regular trips to Salmo or Nelson are significant. The cost—both in terms of time and fuel—places an undue burden on community members, particularly those who may not have the means to afford these additional expenses.
This facility is a public service that our tax dollars help maintain, and its removal would be a disservice to those who have relied on it for so long.
By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for keeping the waste disposal site operational in our community, therefore supporting both economic and environmental benefits for everyone. Please join in this effort to ensure that our voices are heard and that our community remains clean and sustainable. Make a difference today by signing and sharing this petition with others.
