Petition for Historical Landmark Status for the Windthorst General Store

The Issue

The Windthorst General Store has been a family owned business in Windthorst, Texas since it was founded by the Weinzapfel family in 1892.  It is the pride of Windthorst.  It is a place to go and see your neighbors and pick up almost anything.  It is still an old fashioned General Store that has changed little over the years. It means a great deal to the town of Windthorst, Archer County,  and to numerous travelers that always stop in when they pass through town.

The store has recently been sold and it has left many in the community wondering what the future may hold.  I want to make clear it does not appear the buyer has any ill intention.  He has applied for a liquor license with the county so that would indicate he intends to continue to operate the store as is.

Since the announcement of the sale it seems people have stopped patronizing the General Store and that was not my intention with this effort.  If we want to honor the General Store and keep it in business for many years to come it is more important than ever to support the store.  Let the current and future owners know we love this store and will do what ever is needed to preserve it.

The historic business has never been designated as a historical landmark at the national, state, or county level. The process for those designations is lengthy.  It is my hope this petition can be presented to the City Government so they can pass a historic preservation ordinance.   Please join me by signing this petition to preserve our precious history.

Disclaimer:  I have no relation to any past, current, or future owner of this business.  I am a resident of the town it is located in and have no personal stake in the outcome of the petition.  I encourage you to contact the current owner if you would like clarification of any facts before signing.
