Why this petition matters
It has been made public knowledge that Australia's Cultural and Historical Repository will be reviewed for defunding in July 2023.
The Minister responsible for this review is Tony Burke MP
Should TROVE be defunded the extrapolated ramifications on Australia's Heritage as it is recorded and digitized by TROVE and its partners will be beyond comprehension.
Who will be affected when we lose this repository of Australia's Heritage or it be downscaled.
Mums and Dads
Students and Pupils
Researchers
Genealogists
Clubs & Associations
Historians
Schools, Colleges, Universities
Businesses
Social Media Researchers Sites and Groups
TROVE is now the single most complete repository of Australia's Historical, Genealogical, Newspaper, Magazine, Photo, Images and Data available, but because of the need to upgrade storage and technological capabilities, the ongoing commitment to doing this is in jeopardy.
The issue is: Stepping away from Australia's Heritage and the upgrading and storage of our Historical identity is not something that can be outsourced or on sold to other national interests or international corporations.
The recording of Australia's history, its Culture and all records as they are found, need to be digitized for the commonwealth of all Australians. The process cannot be piece meal either, One historical document cannot be trashed in some kind of arbitrary decision making process on its value in comparison to another.
The Mums and Dads, School children, Genealogists, Historians, Researchers, Universities, High Schools, Primary and Infant schools, Graduates, Pupils, Businesses, Clubs, Historical Associations, Societies, Social Media Groups, Libraries; rely on TROVE; the list is infinite of people that utilise TROVE for all or some of their research and information and is collectively beyond formulating a price for.
The thought that TROVE could be on sold to other National interests or a foreign company that could possibly sell the right to you to research about YOUR family or our countries Cultural Heritage is galling.
At the same time to have interests outside of Australia, determine what is profitable from our National Heritage to digitize, record and store, moving forward, is also of national concern.
Please sign this petition to ensure funding for Australia's Cultural and Historic Record Keeping Heritage is not only budgeted for, but secured with the knowledge that our Heritage will continue to be recorded and maintained utilising the most modern and up to date methods available into the future.
If TROVE were to be defunded much of Australia's unrecorded historical heritage will be lost from the disparate places records are currently held, There is also the possibility that current holdings of Data would be parred down, thereby losing current National Heritage records.
TROVE is OUR National Repository resource for photos, news article digitization, stories, images, videos, magazines, books, film, articles, it must be resourced for our Cultural and National Heritage.
