Save the tree belt at North Berwick High School

The Issue

There are several options for the expansion of the sports pitches at North Berwick High School. We the undersigned express our support for the expansion plan that would retain the tree belt - Option 2.

This will save an important wildlife corridor, preserve biodiversity to be found within the tree belt and the many species to be found there, and would be in line with East Lothian Council's biodiversity and climate strategies. The tree belt is valuable for creating greener school grounds, provides shelter and a crucial method of drainage for the sports pitches, as well as being an important visual barrier between the school and nearby housing. Any plan which causes the removal of the tree belt would have a hugely detrimental impact

We recognise the need for improved sports infrastructure within the school but we believe that this should not conflict with conserving biodiversity and responding to the climate emergency. As an Eco-Schools green flag school, NBHS has made a commitment to sustainability which should be honoured and built upon.

We call on East Lothian Council to consult directly and meaningfully with school pupils, parents, and the wider community on any proposals for the school expansion as required in Scottish Government guidance.

Save the tree belt - choose Option 2.
