I; the head color guard and  winter guard coach/instructor, received devastating news today. The head of HR made me aware that our program, starting next year, will no longer exist. 

The school board in Nottoway County, has made the decision to cut/eliminate the Color Guard & Winter Guard program, as “we just don’t have the numbers.” 

I, along with several parents and affiliates, have built this program from the ground up. In my last three years, participation has gone up over 50%. While the numbers do not reflect the early 2000s (as we can imagine, COVID, and economic issues come into play) our numbers have done nothing but increase these past few years. 

Marching band and Color Guard provide a safe space to reflect, and let go of all that has been holding one back. You learn discipline, responsibility, accountability, and so much more. 

Nottoway’s Color Guard program saved my life. I truly do not know where I’d be without it. I continued this sport in college, and now have had the high honor of teaching this. I even graduated from Nottoway, and it has been so joyous giving back to my own community. 

My goals, hopes, and dreams consist of continuing this amazing program. Guiding, comforting, and teaching those who are passionate and willing to learn.

Music and art take you places you could never imagine.
