Save The Shoppers Food Warehouse in Coral Hills, MD again

The Issue

The community of Coral Hills, MD, is facing a crisis yet again with the imminent closure of the Shoppers Food Warehouse — the only grocery store serving our neighborhood. This is not the first time we have faced such a loss. Back in 2019 and 2020, we saw the closure of 17 Shoppers locations in the Washington and Baltimore areas alone, impacting communities in Annapolis, Oxon Hill, Waldorf, Lexington Park, Landover, Colmar, Wheaton, Takoma Park, Hyattsville, Potomac Yards, Burke, Falls Church And Few In Baltimore Plus Springfield, VA & Rockville, MD. These closures have left many communities scrambling for basic necessities.

The Shoppers Food Warehouse in Coral Hills is not just a grocery store; it's a community lifeline. Many residents, especially the elderly and those without reliable transportation, rely on this store to access affordable and healthy food options. Its closure would create a food desert, severely limiting access to essential groceries.

Our community cannot afford to lose another vital resource. According to the USDA, food deserts affect both rural and urban communities and contribute to health disparities due to lack of access to fresh produce and healthy food options. If Shoppers closes, Coral Hills would join the list of underserved areas struggling with food insecurity.

We call on the local government and Shoppers leadership to reconsider this closure. We urge them to engage with the community to explore sustainable business models or partnerships that could keep the Coral Hills location open. This could include collaborations with local farmers for produce, instituting loyalty programs to boost customer retention, or diversifying product lines to cater to specific community needs.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the resilience of our Coral Hills community to ensure everyone has access to the essential service this Shoppers provides. It's time to stand together and show that we value our local grocery store. Please sign and help us keep our community vibrant and nourished.
