Save the Shellfish Reefs at Long Beach, Coffin Bay: Establish a Sanctuary Zone

Save the Shellfish Reefs at Long Beach, Coffin Bay: Establish a Sanctuary Zone
The issue
We, the undersigned, call on the South Australian Government to take immediate action to stop the destruction of the shellfish reefs at Long Beach, Coffin Bay, and to designate these vital ecosystems as a protected Sanctuary Zone.
Why Shellfish Reefs Matter:
Shellfish reefs, particularly those formed by razorfish, oysters, and mussels, are foundational ecosystems that play a critical role in the health of marine environments.
These reefs:
- Provide essential habitat and breeding grounds for a diversity of marine species, including fish, crabs, and other invertebrates, contributing to the overall biodiversity of Coffin Bay’s waters.
- Act as natural water filters, with shellfish capable of filtering large volumes of water, thus improving water quality and clarity for surrounding habitats.
- Serve as natural coastal buffers, reducing shoreline erosion and protecting against storm surges and rising sea levels.
- Are historically and culturally significant to the people of Coffin Bay and Eyre Peninsula, with a longstanding connection to both the Indigenous and local communities.
Current Threats
Despite their ecological, cultural, and economic importance, the shellfish reefs at Long Beach face significant destruction due to:
- Overfishing and unsustainable harvesting practices.
Pollution and sedimentation from surrounding land use. - Boat traffic and unregulated human activity leading to physical damage to the reefs.
Without urgent intervention, these reefs will continue to degrade, resulting in the loss of their vital ecosystem services, further threatening Coffin Bay’s marine biodiversity and community livelihoods.
Our Call to Action:
We urge the South Australian Government to:
- Cease all activities that contribute to the destruction of the shellfish reefs at Long Beach, including harmful fishing practices and unregulated human impacts.
- Declare the Long Beach shellfish reefs a Sanctuary Zone, ensuring that the area is protected from damaging activities and promoting ecological recovery and resilience.
- Implement a comprehensive management plan that includes habitat restoration, sustainable use, and community-led stewardship programs to rehabilitate and protect the reefs for future generations.
- Invest in scientific research to monitor the health of the reefs, identify key threats, and inform ongoing conservation efforts in Coffin Bay and across the Eyre Peninsula.
Support for Local Economies and Tourism
Protecting the shellfish reefs at Long Beach does not mean compromising local industries. On the contrary, establishing a sanctuary zone will enhance Coffin Bay’s reputation as an ecotourism destination, attracting visitors to experience sustainable marine tourism and contributing to the long-term economic prosperity of the region. Healthy reefs will support recreational fishing, snorkeling, and diving industries, fostering opportunities for both locals and visitors to engage with the natural environment responsibly.
