Save the Scott Avenue Court Bungalows & Protect Tenant Rights

The Issue

We are a close-knit community of neighbors, living together at the historic Scott Avenue Court Bungalows in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Today, we are at risk of losing our homes, our sanctuaries, due to a proposal which would divide the property into separate parcels which could be sold to the highest bidder. Under this proposal, 10 rent-stabilized units would be removed from the market, displacing 10 families, some of whom have lived here for four decades.

The subdivision is being proposed using a loophole in the City's contentious Small Lot Ordinance, a law intended to alleviate the City's escalating housing crisis by incentivizing developers to build condos and townhouses on smaller lots. However, in this case, the law is being misused to evade rent stabilization and eviction protections for the families living here. There's a troubling irony in finding ourselves threatened with homelessness using a law to address the housing affordability crisis, and if the proposal moves forward it will set a dangerous precedent.

As per the LA Times, rent-stabilized units are essential as they offer affordable housing in a city where rents have soared 65% since 2010. If our units are lost, it’s not just us who suffer; the City loses too. We must stop this displacement from becoming a harsh reality.

We urge authorities to carefully review this proposal and consider its human consequences, while we ask you, our fellow Angelinos, to stand with us in this fight. Sign this petition to save our homes and preserve tenants' rights in Los Angeles.
