During this in-between time, while the Board of Supervisors has declined to grant a permit to demolish the buildings in the Pocahontas Landmark Center complex and the time when the fate of the buildings is more secure, it's important to map a path forward. Perhaps it can be a path that benefits all stakeholders.
Here is a Facebook share that highlights what neighboring Amelia County has done that's led to safeguarding its historic school. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1ABgAxU4fA/
It would be helpful to know if you are 1) Willing to join an official organization to champion preservation of Pocahontas 2) Willing to commit to a specific role, such as fundraising, research or promotion and 3) Willing to pledge a specific dollar amount to rehabilitate and improve the buildings, should the school board respond favorably to our requests.
For now, you may answer these three questions by emailing mythoughts@pocahontas.com. Soon, there may also be a survey to ask these pointed questions.
If you have not already taken the existing survey, please do so at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8Z6THHY
We need willing people to help lead this effort and to fill important support roles. We also need more examples of how other communities have come through this difficult challenge successfully.
Thank you for reaching out and for staying committed to the course. #savepocahontas
