Petition updateSave the Pocahontas School Complex from Planned DemolitionWhat's Next for Pocahontas?

The Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday night went as well as possible, under the circumstances, with all five board members voting to deny a demolition permit. However, that is only one more step in the process of saving Pocahontas. The buildings still belong to the school board-- or at least, legally and officially, they do.

It's still vital to continue expressing to the school board your preferences for what happens next. No one wants the buildings to sit idle for an extended time, continuing to deteriorate. No one wants to see more battling between boards. And everyone, presumably, who has signed on to this cause wants to see a smart plan for renovation that keeps school personnel safe.

To that end, please continue to call, email and write the school board members and let them know what you prefer. This is especially important if you live in the county and/or pay taxes in the county. Soon, we will be reaching out with additional information and questions for you to help delineate proponents' preferences.

It's important that you understand that any call for resignations or recalls of board members have not originated with the petition organizers and is not what we are representing as the position of those who have signed this petition. If others wish to pursue that, it is there prerogative. But please do not conflate this effort with whatever they are doing.

We are asking for reasonableness, fiscal soundness, and fidelity to the historical significance of these buildings. We are asking for cooperation, collaboration and ultimately, a win for all to the greatest extent possible.
