Save the Planetarium and Observatory in the upcoming Science Center expansion!
The Issue
Formerly called the South Florida Science Museum and Planetarium, the newly named COX Science Center and Aquarium is planning an extensive $140 million expansion and renovation.

However, the available models and graphics no longer show the recently renovated planetarium and observatory, and do not show plans for upgrades to either with the latest technology. Instead of removing these educational facilities, they should be upgraded with the newest shows and equipment!
Palm Beach County is home to the nation's 10th largest public school system. Thousands of children and adults from all over South Florida have been visiting the Science Museum since it was founded in 1959 by the Junior League of the Palm Beaches. The Planetarium opened soon after in 1961, dedicated by and named after astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

Losing this unique landmark will directly impact space education in Palm Beach County. Science classes and Scout Troops will no longer be able to visit for field trips to learn about astronomy. With the excessive light pollution from the lights of the growing city, many people have never experienced the awe and wonder of seeing an actual night sky full of stars and visiting a planetarium is the closest they will ever come.
The International Planetarium Society outlines these risks and more in depth, in the below White Papers:
Please take a moment now to sign this petition, and share your memories of visiting the local Planetarium so as plans are made for the expansion of this community science center, your voice can be heard.
Additionally, please write or email the COX Science Center to share your concerns with the loss of our local venue that has served for over 60 years as an inspiration to so many.
