Since joining the Order of the Arrow in 2022, I’ve had the honor of serving on my chapter’s CEC as Treasurer, before becoming Chapter Cheif.  I’ve worked with an amazing team and grown even more committed to the Order's core principles of cheerfulness, service, and brotherhood. These values guide me not only in Scouting but in every part of my life.

Recently, I learned that last year’s Vigil class would be the final one to receive a Native American-translated name engraved on their Vigil medallions. I found myself deeply saddened by this, as I’ve long hoped to one day receive this honor that has been part of our tradition for over a hundred years. At this year’s Section Conference, I was also told that it would be the last ceremony involving feathers. For me, it was both my first—and my last. I couldn’t help but wonder: why end such a powerful, long-standing tradition?

During the awards ceremony, I noticed the Master of Ceremonies holding back tears. He had led this ceremony since his youth and passed the tradition down to his children. He’s attended powwows led by Native people and has trained generations of dancers. His emotion was genuine—and I shared it.

At this year's L.L.D. we were inform that there are changing the Ordeal completely, removing the traditions of scant food, a day of quiet service, and even now the changing of the ceremonies. We have pledge to uphold the traditions of the Order of the Arrow, removing these will be the earsing of these tradtions.

I understand that in the past, some elements of these ceremonies may have been seen as disrespectful. But in recent years, I’ve seen them shift toward education and inclusion—highlighting Native culture in ways that are both respectful and meaningful. For many Arrowmen, these ceremonies were the only time they encountered and learned about Native traditions and values. Removing these elements feels like erasing what may be the largest representation of Native culture within Scouting.
