The Issue

The Nokia Bell Labs campus in Murray Hill, New Jersey, is the sacred ground of modern human genius. This iconic masterpiece is where the transistor, cellular networks, and the Unix operating system were born. Following Nokia's decision to vacate and relocate the campus by 2028, this irreplaceable historic asset faces an immediate crisis. The Township of Berkeley Heights is currently investigating the property for redevelopment. If we do not act now, short-sighted developers will use the wrecking ball to flatten this legendary structure, replacing it with soulless logistics warehouses or high-density residential complexes.
We must fight to protect the structural integrity of this landmark, ensuring it remains an elite, iconic piece of real estate. We refuse to let corporate greed bulldoze the shoulders of giants. We demand that the buildings be structurally protected so they can eventually be transitioned to private buyers who respect their profound historical weight and will maintain them as premier corporate, commercial, or private innovation hubs.
We, the undersigned, stand in fierce, absolute opposition to any demolition or structural erasure of the Murray Hill campus. We call on Nokia’s Executive Leadership, the Township of Berkeley Heights, the Borough of New Providence, and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office to enforce strict protections.
We demand:
No Demolition Permits: An immediate ban on any permits aimed at tearing down or permanently altering the architectural integrity of the main mid-century buildings.
Preservation of Commercial Zoning: A rejection of any rezoning attempts to convert the campus into heavy industrial truck warehouses or high-density residential subdivisions, keeping the campus footprint intact as a unified, private commercial asset.
Adaptive Private Reuse: A commitment from local planners to support future private-sector buyers who pledge to keep the historic structures standing, allowing the campus to be privately revitalized rather than demolished.

True progress does not crush history; it preserves it for visionary leaders to carry forward. Sign this petition today to stop the demolition trucks and keep this historic campus intact on the open market!
