The Issue

Libraries are essential cornerstones of thriving communities. They provide internet and computer access, printing and copying services, educational tools, and safe, welcoming spaces for everyone—especially children, families, seniors, and new residents.

The Moses Lake Public Library is one of our town’s most valuable resources. It offers free books for learning and leisure, hosts storytime and youth programs, supports job-seekers, and creates a space of dignity and inclusion for all.

And now—it’s at risk of being shut down.

The issue isn’t with the library itself. It’s the building. At 70 years old, it needs extensive repairs—more than half a million dollars’ worth. And while the library staff continues to provide exceptional service, the city, which owns the building, has not committed to fixing it.

Under the current agreement, the City of Moses Lake is responsible for providing the facility. The North Central Washington (NCW) Library system provides the services. That partnership has served this community well for decades. But now, without a city-led solution—either repairing the current building or securing a new one—our public library cannot continue.

This isn’t just a building—it’s a lifeline.
And the people of Moses Lake can’t afford to lose it.

We’re not here to place blame. We’re here to demand action.
Let’s honor the agreement. Let’s invest in our future.
Let’s save our library.

Why It Matters

The Moses Lake Library is not the problem—it’s part of the solution. It’s where:

📖 Children fall in love with reading
💻 Students without Wi-Fi can do homework
🧓 Seniors stay connected and engaged
👨‍👩‍👧 Families find support, programs, and joy
💙 And yes, every human—housed or unhoused—is treated with respect and kindness

This library is not a luxury. It’s a public service—as vital as fire departments or clinics.

Numerous studies from the American Library Association and others show that libraries uplift local economies, support small businesses, improve public health literacy, and increase educational outcomes.

Closing this library would send a chilling message: that this town chooses blame over solutions and control over compassion.

What We’re Asking

We, the undersigned, believe the Moses Lake City Council must reverse course. We demand:

✅ A public commitment to keep the Moses Lake Library open and fully funded
✅ An end to the scapegoating of library staff and services
✅ A long-term plan that supports both community safety and public access to resources
