Save the Montgomery Pass Mustangs !
The Issue
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)and US Forest Service (USFS)are planning to roundup and remove 624 of 694 wild mustangs in the Sierra Mountains in California, very soon. Leaving a maximum of 70 horses on 200,000 acres, will cause inbreeding and leave them vulnerable to mountain lions which have kept their population fairly stable for 38 years. Nearby petroglyphs depicting horses suggest that some horses survived the ice age and were present before Columbus arrived with horses from Europe. This makes this herd a living link to 14 million years of continuous horse evolution in the Americas, rather than feral livestock as BLM claims. They deserve special protection as an Official Study Herd, rather than elimination as an invasive species
Why the roundup now ? Allegedly to prevent highway collisions on lightly traveled roads with virtually no signs warning motorists of horse crossings. Some also claim, without proof, that horses have damaged tourist attractions called tufas, mineral columns along nearby Mono Lake,
The real reason for the mass roundup most likely has to do with the new push to industrialize our public lands. In the Sierras this entails reviving mines for gold, silver and other minerals on land reserved primarily for wild horses by the Wild Horse and Burro Act which was passed unanimously by both houses of Congress in 1971. Mining in this era of environmental deregulation will likely cause groundwater pollution. Federal officials don't want to have to explain a trail of dead mustangs in the Sierras to the public.
Montgomery Pass horses fertilize and moisturize hundreds of acres of dry soils every year with hundreds of tons of fresh horse manure and also create vast firebreaks in in wildfire ravaged California, free of charge, annually and many more free services. If losing these benefits and their majestic presence for no good reason, sounds wrong to you then please say so by signing and sharing my petition with all of your animal loving friends. Join me in urging BLM to call off the roundup and designate Montgomery Pass Horses as an Official Study Herd to learn how to keep mustang populations stable without chemicals or roundups, and also to probe their historic connection to pre-Columbian mustangs.
Moreover, this would give the BLM more time to finally provide reliable to bolster ample, reliable water sources on their territory so they don't cross highways to find it.
. STOP THE MONTGOMERY PASS ROUNDUP so that we can study them extensively and intensively , to learn the many secrets this unique herd has to share with US.
