Save the McMinnville VA Clinic
The Issue
The McMinnville VA Clinic in Tennessee has been a lifeline for thousands of veterans in our rural community. For many, driving long distances to larger cities for healthcare is not just an inconvenience—it’s a major barrier. This centrally located clinic provides essential services that cater to the specific needs of veterans, ensuring that they receive the care and support they deserve.
The closure of the McMinnville clinic would mean that veterans in Warren, Van Buren, Grundy, DeKalb and White counties would lose a critical healthcare resource. It is not just about convenience; it is about access to timely and specialized care that many veterans rely upon.
Veterans have served our country selflessly, and it is our duty to ensure they have the healthcare support they need upon returning home. The McMinnville VA Clinic offers services that are tailored for veterans’ health needs that would otherwise be out of reach for many.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans in rural areas face significant challenges when accessing healthcare services, including geographic isolation, lack of transportation options, and limited access to specialized venues like VA clinics. Closing this clinic would exacerbate these challenges, making it even harder for veterans to access the care they so rightfully deserve.
It is inconceivable that the McMinnville VA clinic could close at the end of 2026. It is a dereliction of duty and failure of leadership to not arrive at a sustainable solution. There are at least two good options to keeping the McMinnville VA Clinic open: 1). Beef up the contract funding and retention bonuses to hire and retain qualified staff and prove more resources for expanded levels of care or 2) Bring the McMinnville VA Clinic into the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System with VA employees and a properly funded and equipped VA Facility. Closure of this vital, centrally located, rural VA Clinic is simply not an acceptable option. Furthermore, postponing closure until after an election cycle to only arrive at the same conclusion would look like a cynical ploy to not only abandon but silence our veterans after asking for our vote.
We are calling on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and federal lawmakers to recognize the critical role that the McMinnville clinic plays in the lives of veterans in our area. Rather than cutting and closing services, we need to invest more in such facilities that are pillars of support for our rural communities.
