The Issue

A proposal has been made to amend the zoning to facilitate the development of 45 Townhouse units at the very edge of the ecologically sensitive McKenzie Marsh in Aurora.  This proposal threatens to degrade, pollute and destroy the marsh, a vital and irreplaceable natural resource. The effects that such unnecessary and entirely inappropriate development would have on the Marsh would be irreversible, profoundly affecting the myriad of species that depend on this precious and interconnected wetland habitat.

This development proposal has been initially rejected by the Aurora Town Council, however the developer has appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal(OLT).  This places pressure on the Town of Aurora to settle with the developer and the appeal could result in overturning the original Council decision.

We are requesting that immediate action be taken to protect and conserve the McKenzie Marsh, a Provincially Significant wetland and its surrounding habitat located in north Aurora. This vital ecological zone plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of our natural environment, supporting a diverse array of wildlife, providing essential water filtration, and acting as a natural flood barrier. It’s a shining example of the success where community, municipal, regional and provincial levels of government have, to date, collaborated to nurture this environmentally significant asset we can all be proud of.

The McKenzie Marsh is home to numerous species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles including several that are listed as  "at risk" under the Provincial Species as Risk Act. Preserving this area is critical for maintaining biodiversity and the health of our interrelated ecosystems.

Wetlands like McKenzie Marsh are invaluable for filtering pollutants from water, storing carbon, and mitigating the impacts of climate change by controlling floods and buffering storm impacts.

This wetland is  a place where our community engages with nature, learns about environmental stewardship, and practices sustainable recreation. It is enjoyed and appreciated by our community and is also a renowned destination for many out-of-town environmental enthusiasts.

We are asking for:

1. Rejection of the Proposal to amend the zoning by-law for 65 St John's Sideroad to facilitate  development of the property.

2. Affirmation that the current zoning is appropriate and will be maintained.

3. Recognition that the Marsh, its surrounding habitats and its benefits is a natural resource worth protecting for generations to come.
