Why this petition matters

Started by sophie morley

We are a group of 5 Year 13 students from Rangitoto College. In New Zealand, the Maui dolphins are critically endangered and face impending extinction. Maui dolphins are endemic to New Zealand, and humans and people in authority have a responsibility to protect animals that have been sabotaged by the human race. It is estimated that only 63 Maui dolphins are left surviving today, thanks to the inconsiderate fishing behaviours of commercial fisheries. However, the Maui dolphins can thrive once again if we eliminate all human threats by 50% to 75% in the next ten years. We can still save the Maui dolphins, but we need your help.

Losing the Maui dolphins would be a problem for New Zealand because we would be losing a unique, special animal at the hands of our failed conservation. This poses an ethical predicament where animals that we are responsible for have gone extinct because of our behaviour. It is also negative because any elimination of an animal from the food chain or oceanic ecosystem could be detrimental to the lives of many other species.

We believe policy needs to change to address this social issue. The policy we want to change is the marine environment protection policy. A more effective policy would be one that is far more active and widely known, so that not only those in authority are aware of it, but those committing the issues too.

By signing this petition, you are empowering this campaign so that it can reach the eyes and ears of those who have the power to make change. Every signature counts, and the Maui dolphins need you.
