Save the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Redoing the Multiverse Saga

Save the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Redoing the Multiverse Saga
The Issue
We all know that the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has been declining in quality for these past years, and you are very likely thinking to yourself “How did this franchise fall from grace so quickly when it was at its peak 5 years ago?”
Well, the reason is that the QUALITY has taken a backseat for QUANTITY. Over the past few years, Marvel has created roughly 27 entries in their franchise alone since the release of Wandavision back in 2021
Due to quantity taking over, the quality has dwindled significantly, thus leading to Poor Writing, Poor CGI, Poor Storyline, Poor Dialogue, and more.
Let’s discuss these main poor aspects individually.
- Poor Writing: Many of Marvels’ Products as of recently include lackluster and uncreative writing. For example, in one of the latter episodes of “What If…”, Ultron kills Thanos (While Thanos has the Infinity Gauntlet with many of the stones already) instantly by shooting a laser straight through his body. There are many more examples, like the numerous lackluster, forced jokes included in the script because the writers feel obligated to do so, or how in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, America Chavez randomly unlocks complete control over her multiverse-hopping powers after being given a cheesy, cheap motivational speech.
- Poor CGI: Due to the quantity of the projects, the CGI has taken a huge hit. Like for example, in Black Widow, near the end of the movie when Yelena causes an explosion, The explosion effect feels ripped straight out of a cheap highschool film project. Or how in She-Hulk, the way Jen walks in her Hulk form looks really off-putting.
- Poor Storyline: The recent overarching storyline has been messy, and that’s an understatement. So many of the projects in Phase 4 don’t seem to connect to the Multiverse Saga at all in any way, they just feel like random shows that are just “in the MCU” and nothing more, nothing less. Sure, Loki is genuinely fantastic and connects to the overarching narrative and Shang-Chi is a great origin story for what is assumed to be a prominent character, but Shang Chi hasn’t appeared anywhere but that solo movie since, and most of the MCU producers besides a few nowadays feel directionless. I and many others fail to see how Hawkeye connects to the Multiverse Saga in a significant way for example.
A fix for this storyline issue is to have each and every phase mean something again and end on an Avengers film. Rather that be a Young Avengers film, or a general Avengers film, it NEEDS to end on one no matter what. And the phase needs to build up to that avengers film payoff while also building towards the wider narrative.
The storyline also needs to have more small payoffs in general. Y’know how Ms Marvel came out and we immediately saw her again in The Marvels? Or how Wandavision built up to MoM? stuff like that needs to be the norm again.
In addition, to fix this; you MUST establish the main characters in the first phase (like Iron Man, Thor and Cap being established in Phase 1). The fact we’re halfway through Phase 5 with absolutely no clue on who the main characters are is purely unacceptable.
- Poor Dialogue: This is probably the least of the issues, but this still needs addressing. In certain movies (eg: Thor: Love and Thunder), the dialogue feels blatantly fake. In certain situations, the characters just do not act like real human beings for the sake of telling painfully bad jokes, and that’s unacceptable for a huge blockbuster to be doing. (In general, please get rid of the jokes, they substantially ruin these products nowadays, not every film has to have GotG humor)
Now that we’ve established the main issues, let’s talk about who this affects.
It affects a lot of people, for example, YOU the audience, you shouldn’t be tolerating watching mediocre films being released at rapid-fire rates.
it also affects the VFX artists. Having to work on so many projects in a span of 2 years is unacceptable. The working conditions these people face are terrible and they have my sympathy. And due to their overworking and crunching, the CGI doesn’t turn out as good as it should be, thus once again affecting the audience.
Who is affecting them though? The higher-ups of course, and that needs to CHANGE. Stop putting out so many products per year, it should be 3 at absolute most, not 8 like in 2021.
Now the next question. What is at stake exactly?
Whats at stake if things don’t change is:
- A poor, sour-taste Multiverse Saga that doesn’t leave nearly as good as an impression as the Infinity Saga due to poor choices.
- The livelihood of the VFX artists and numerous other parts of the production team.
- The financial profits of the MCU
- A permanent tainting on the quality of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
and much more.
On the flip-side, if things DO change, then…
- We’ll get a Multiverse Saga that leaves a remarkable impression, that holds somewhat of a candle to the Infinity Saga
- Fairly-treated staff
- An appreciation for the MCU again
- An overall excitement for this franchise again
and of course, much more.
Why is it the time to act NOW of all times?
Well, The Marvels has proven to be a flop at the box office, proving that people are disinterested now. So to Marvel Studios specifically, why are you not changing your game-plan when this, ant-man and more have flopped?
And also, if we don’t act now, it’ll be too late because we’ll be too far into the Multiverse Saga, and redoing it when we enter Phase 6 is gonna be too late. And if we miss it, things will only get worse from here.
Now then, onto my main point. To fix the MCU, Marvel Studios needs to redo The Multiverse Saga.
Of course, not in its entirety. The good projects should remain the same, but the bad ones and the pointless ones need to be eradicated or redone.
Lets put this out into an easy-to-read plan that I think could be viable, however these are just my thoughts:
KEEP means keep the project the way it is. REDO means redo the project. ERASE means to erase the project from canon.
- Wandavision: KEEP. This show is one of the best MCU projects despite its weird last episode. This is a beautifully well-done character study of Wanda that should be kept.
- Black Widow: KEEP. It’s a serviceable movie, nothing more, nothing less. It really shouldn’t have been part of Phase 4 anyways, as it takes place during Phase 3.
- Falcon and the Winter Soldier: REDO. Sam Wilson taking the mantle of Captain America needs to be a Movie, not a show. Not only that, but the runtime needs to be shortened from 6 hours to the movie length, and the villains need improvement.
- Loki Season 1&2: KEEP. This series is perfect, there is no need to change this.
- Shang Chi: KEEP. Keep this, but please have this character appear more-often sooner.
- Hawkeye: KEEP. It’s a pretty solid show, but it’s also still not relevant to the Multiverse Saga plot. This should be a case of “It’s canon” but it shouldn’t be marketed as a big part of Phase 4.
- Eternals. REDO/ERASE: This movie is overbloated, has writing issues and is overall poor. This should be a Disney+ series more than any other product, it needed to be a 14-ish episode long series diving into these characters and establishing them. However, erasing this would be a viable option too.
- Spider-Man: No Way Home: KEEP.
- Doctor Strange 2: REDO. This movie is fundamentally flawed in so many regards, and Dr. Strange doesn’t even feel like the main character in this film. Plus, Wanda is too outlandishly evil here. This film has a number of issues like that terribly written “past memory machine” part or how we only go to 2 universes in a film called Multiverse of MADNESS. This had the potential to be fantastic, but that opportunity was wasted.
- Moon Knight: REDO. Please, just make this a film.
- She-Hulk: ERASE.
- Ms Marvel: KEEP.
- Thor: Love and Thunder: REDO. This film needs an overhaul, and by overhaul I mean a HUGE one. This film should NOT have been a comedy, it should have been dead-serious with the cancer storyline, Gorr and post-endgame Thor, yet it wasn’t?!
- Black Panther 2: REDO. Look, I really like this film for how it is now, it’s a great tribute to Chadwick with amazing acting, but T’Challa should’ve been recasted, he really should’ve. Killing him off when his arc just started was a severe mistake that needs to be fixed.
- Ant Man 3: REDO. This movie had perfect potential, but was wasted with its bad writing quality yet again, its weird editing, Kang being defeated too easily, and more.
- GOTG3: Keep.
- Secret Invasion: ERASE.
- The Marvels: REDO.
Id like to pitch a redone Phase 4-5 lineup that could be good now, with that out of the way.
Anything I mentioned as “KEEP” or “REDO” that isn’t here should be pushed as side content that is optional, like Daredevil on Netflix, and this would be released 2 movies per year at a time.
Here it goes:
Wandavision
Loki 1&2
Captain America: Legacy (Falcon and Winter Solider as a Movie)
Shang-Chi
Hawkeye
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Moon Knight (as a Movie, with less jokes)
Ms Marvel (as a Movie)
Thor: Despair (Serious Thor 4)
Black Panther 2 (With T’Challa)
The Marvels
Bite-Sized Recaps (A Disney+ series recapping each and every film, each episode covers 1 film)
And to cap it off: THE YOUNG AVENGERS.
Starring Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Iron Lad, Kid Loki, and Hawkeye acting as this groups Nick Fury.
This will pay-off certain movies.
PHASE 5:
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (with better story without the “character knows something big but refuses to tell” trope, and with Kang escaping, Ant Man and Hope being trapped in the Quantum Realm, and in a post credit scene, Cassie joining the Young Avengers, asking for help to save her dad.)
Doctor Strange: Multiversal Mayhem (Doctor Strange 2, but with a character-driven DS story and no cheesy writing, and with Wanda not being so irredeemable)
GOTG3 (keep)
Moon Knight 2 (focuses on 3rd alter ego, and also has a character holding a facade who is close to him, revealed to be a skrull)
Shang Chi 2
Captain America: Brave New World (focus a bit on skrulls and the character of Sam Wilson)
Thunderbolts (team-up)
(something can go here)
And to cap off the phase…
Avengers: Secret Invasion.
This will be a nearly-3-hour avengers teamup film based on an Invasion of Skrulls, the lineup will consist of
Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Thor, Black Panther, Hulk and Nick Fury, with help from The Young Avengers and Thunderbolts.
And with Phase 6, it should be self-explanatory.
I’d like to add 2 things too:
- Hire PASSIONATE writers and directors, stop hiring passionless ones.
- Please cancel Blade.
Overall, I just really am passionate about this franchise, and I don’t wanna see it die out like this. Please, Marvel Studios, please fix this saga and make this story meaningful. I miss when Marvel movies felt like big events that we all were excited to see in theaters.
And to you all, please sign this petition, and maybe, just maybe we could make a big difference.
Thank you guys.
