Save the MacBain Farm!

Save the MacBain Farm!
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Closter, New Jersey, recognize the many qualities that make our borough a wonderful place to live. Closter residents care about our people, our community, our land. Nothing exemplifies this more than the MacBain Farm Park.
Once slated for private development, the MacBain Farm Park was instead preserved with the mission of allowing Closter residents to pick fresh produce, for free, during an extensive growing season. What other town offers this level of access to delicious, local, pesticide-free produce?
The Farm has thrived because of tireless volunteer commitment to its mission and farmer John McCaffrey’s stewardship of the land. Thanks to these Closter residents, hundreds of our neighbors have picked fresh, free produce from June-October, every year, for over 20 years.
We are at risk of losing this. Against the wishes of Closter residents, the Mayor and Town Council are considering transferring management of the farm, upending its current structure, community support and volunteers. We fear that new management will introduce commercialization, non-Closter events and greater parking distress.
By signing this petition, we affirm our support for the Farm under its current management. We recognize the time and effort invested in the Farm’s current structure and people, and know that its success cannot be replicated under new leadership and without the support of its volunteers or its community. The MacBain Farm Park has been and continues to be a great gem of Closter. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
