The Little Red Hen, a cherished establishment in Seattle's community since 1933, received a notice to vacate by July 31st, 2025. The Little Red Hen Business Owner has made statements that he intends to continue business beyond July 31st, but we are unaware of a confirmed resolution between the Business Owner and Landlord. We hope this petition will raise community awareness and influence key parties to reach a resolution. We really need your help.
Our community was given only 34 days’ notice. This abrupt move jeopardizes not only a cherished business, but also dozens of local jobs and cultural fabric woven over decades.
For over 92 years, The Little Red Hen has been more than just a bar. Nestled in the heart of Green Lake, it’s a true “third space” and a living piece of Seattle’s soul. For generations, this iconic honky-tonk venue has been a home for musicians, dancers, cowboys, and community members throughout the I-5 corridor. It hosts live country music, two-stepping & line dance lessons, karaoke, bluegrass jams, and special moments ranging from birthdays to celebration of lives. The Little Red Hen may be the last place where music and dance cross age, gender, politics, and ability. We listen and learn about each other in ways unique to this magical place.
This location matters. When Sylvia moved the bar from Phinney Ridge to Green Lake in 1968 (later buying the building herself, a rare feat for women at the time), it became even more significant to Seattle. Today, people drive over 40 miles, from Bellingham in the north to Bonney Lake in the south, to gather at The Little Red Hen. Many have even chosen to move nearby just to be within walking distance of this special place.
We ask for the following:
- Public Support & Intervention: From city leaders, neighbors, and organizations to help protect this cornerstone of Seattle culture.
- Lease Resolution: The property owners and the current business owner to engage in good faith discussions toward a fair and transparent lease agreement, with the shared goal of keeping The Little Red Hen open as a valued creative third-space.
- Long-Term Protections: Ensuring The Little Red Hen remains a welcoming stage for musicians, dancers, and dreamers for generations to come.

The Little Red Hen is a living tapestry of stories, joy, and shared history. Losing it would mean erasing nearly a century of Seattle’s cultural and musical landscape. To preserve the legacy of The Little Red Hen, we urge the community, near and far, to stand with us. Join us in advocating for a reconsideration of the notice to vacate, push for a resolution between the Landlords and Business Owners of The Little Red Hen, and protects this landmark’s unparalleled value to Seattle.
Let city leaders, the media, our broader community, and anyone you know how important it is to protect this space. Together, we can ensure that The Little Red Hen continues to write new chapters in people’s lives and Seattle’s story.
