The Issue

Hey neighbors! Today, to my dismay, I saw a sign posted on the Peninsula indicating that the City of Long Beach is proposing to demolish our beloved historic Seaside Boardwalk, and replace it with a plastic one. This boardwalk, built in the early 1920s, is the last remaining wooden oceanfront boardwalk in LA County. Seeing that sign broke my heart, as I know it did for many of you who cherish this significant piece of our community's heritage.

The Boardwalk holds not just historical value but also a special place in the hearts of all those who have enjoyed its charm over the decades. From nostalgic family strolls to the many milestones celebrated along this stretch, it has been more than just a pathway—it has been a canvas of cherished memories, a testament to our shared history, and a vital part of our community’s identity.

The city is planning to replace this iconic structure with a plastic alternative. While modernization and maintenance are important, we should not lose such a meaningful part of our identity to short-sighted practicality. Plastic may seem cost-efficient now, but it will never hold the warmth, character, and timelessness of our original wooden boardwalk. Moreover, plastic can harm our environment, and future generations deserve the chance to experience the boardwalk as so many of us have.

We are at a critical junction. A virtual public hearing will be held on October 27th at 2 PM via Zoom, where members of the community can voice their opinions. This is our chance to speak up and urge the city to explore alternative solutions that both preserve our boardwalk’s integrity and ensure its longevity. We should restore and maintain the boardwalk, not replace it!

Please, lend your voice to this cause to ensure that our last wooden oceanfront boardwalk stands strong for years to come. Share your personal stories and join us in expressing how vital this boardwalk is to our community’s history and spirit.

Sign this petition to help save the Peninsula Boardwalk and encourage the city to preserve not just a structure, but a beloved symbol of our past and a bridge to our future. And please share it with as many friends and neighbors as you can!
