Growing up by the seaside in Wellington instilled in me a profound respect and admiration for the ocean and those who dedicate their lives to keeping it safe. It's this love for the sea and a passion for safety that drives me to take action. The imminent decommissioning of the Wellington police vessel "the Lady Elizabeth" threatens the safety and security of all who navigate our waters.

For 84 remarkable years, the Lady Elizabeth and her dedicated crew have been the unsung heroes of Wellington Harbour. This iconic vessel has saved countless lives. A notable rescue occurred in January 2023 when the Lady Elizabeth played a pivotal role in safeguarding 880 lives during the Inter Islander incident. This is not just a police boat; it's a lifeline for our community.

The New Zealand Police have announced the vessel will be decommissioned in December 2025 due to funding cuts. This decision puts lives at risk, as it removes an essential safety net for both local and visiting seafarers. In a region where waters are as tumultuous as ours, there is no substitute for the experience and immediacy the Lady Elizabeth provides.

While we understand budget constraints are real, the safety of our community must always take precedence. Redirecting funds to preserve this essential service is not just a desire; it is a necessity.
