Save the Koala Habitat in Bray Park

Save the Koala Habitat in Bray Park
The issue
We need your help to save the koala habitat at 4 mile Creek Bray Park.
This is the home of known koalas: "Marbles", "Halsin", "Bluebell" & at least one other mum and baby.
Moreton Bay Council committed in 2022 to protect 75% of our region from urban development. “We need to contain our urban footprint to 25% of our region. By protecting 75% of Moreton Bay from urban development we’ll ensure we retain important, productive rural areas, greenspace and habitat for wildlife.” – Mayor Peter Flannery
Despite this statement, plans were made back in 2021 to construct a park, over land where there is currently koala habitat trees & koalas are living. This is to proceed at the end of October 2024, which is peak koala breeding season!
Right next to this, is open green space which would suit a park perfectly.
There are approx 270 regenerating eucalyptus trees in the firing line, some are already 3-4m high. Eucalypts don't become of use for koalas until a tree is around 8-10 years old. We need to save these trees.
Background: Council consultation took place in May-June 2021. This was during the peak of Covid, so limited people have said that they attended this or even knew about it. Those who did attend, state that they were made aware of the future park, but not of where it would be, or that it would involve removing koala habitat.
Koalas were listed as endangered in February 2022, which was after Council's consultation. This reclassification alone should warrant a rethink of what is planned for the area. The south side of the area is Core Koala Habitat and the north side of this area is Koala Priority mapped. Koalas do not recognise the boundaries of these maps. Because the southside of the area is prone to flooding, the northside of the area is where the koalas spend most of their time.
Not only is this recorded koala habitat and a corridor for koalas along the 4 Mile Creek, but it is also home to nesting birds: Banded Rail, Quail, Bush Curlew, Pale Headed Rosella, Lorikeets, Tawny Frogmouth, Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo, Kookaburra, Whip Birds, Koel, Pheasant Coucal and many more species can be seen through the habitat as it exists now. Yes, Bandicoots and snakes too, due to the many frogs and insects along the creek….
59 new houses have been built within the last 2 years in Walsham St area, none of these people have had an opportunity to have a say, nor have the 2 major koala rescue groups, or the environmental/tree planting groups from the area.
We have also seen 10 koala deaths in the last 2 years at one end of this corridor (Gympie Rd), so this safehaven is even more important now.
We kindly ask Council to cease with the removal of the trees and bushland by modifying their plans and utilising the open green space already there, after proper consultation with the residents who live in the area now. We have no objection to a park, we just would like the opportunity to strike the right balance between suitable outdoor spaces and the ecological needs of our fauna and flora before it’s too late.
