Save the Island Bay Marine Education Centre "Bait Shed"
The issue
The Island Bay Marine Education Centre, affectionately known as "The Bait Shed", holds a unique place in the heart of Island Bay, Wellington. It was built in 1950 and served as a place where the Italian Fishermen used to store bait, hence its name. They left from there to fish and came back at the end of the day to that very point. Since 1996, it has been a beacon of marine education, offering invaluable programs that enlighten both children and adults about the rich marine life surrounding our coasts. Personally, this place has great significance because my Italian ancestors were among the fishermen who first called this bay their home. The Bait Shed is much more than a marine education centre; it is a living testament to our community's heritage, especially the legacy of the Italian fishermen of Island Bay.
Unfortunately, Wellington City Council is considering changes that could affect the future of The Bait House, as part of its draft coastal reserves management plan for the next five to seven years. These changes could alter the historical and educational value the centre currently offers. The centre encounters approximately 25,000 visitors annually, proving its significant role in both education and tourism.
Preserving The Bait Shed/Marine Education Centre, is crucial not only for maintaining this link to our ancestry but also for the future generations who benefit from its educational programs and its role in fostering an appreciation for marine conservation. If these proposed changes go forward, we risk losing a vital part of our cultural and historical landscape, which would be a tremendous loss to our community.
I urge the citizens of Island Bay and Wellington, along with officials at the Wellington City Council, to recognize the importance of The Bait Shed. Let's rally together to ensure this iconic piece of our identity remains intact for future generations. Please sign this petition to save the Island Bay Marine Education Centre and keep our heritage alive.
