The Issue

Growing up and living in Lebanon, Tennessee, I have always cherished the town square, particularly the historical cabin that stands as a testament to our town's rich history. Every time I pass through the square, the cabin serves not just as a beautiful reminder of our heritage, but as a symbol of the stories and traditions that have shaped our community.

However, this cherished landmark is now under threat as the city of Lebanon plans to replace it with picnic tables. Removing a piece of our history for a temporary convenience would be a loss not just for those of us who have lived here, but for future generations who might never experience this piece of our past.

Lebanon, like many towns, is rich in history and culture. The cabin in the town square is more than just a structure; it's part of our identity, a landmark seen and appreciated by residents and visitors alike. It’s a tangible connection to the past in a rapidly changing world. Preserving it is essential to maintaining the character and spirit of our town.

According to a report by the Lebanon Historical Society, this cabin has been an integral part of our community since the early 1800s, serving various roles as the town developed. This enduring structure offers educational opportunities, a chance for school children and history lovers to learn firsthand about our town’s history. Moreover, in terms of tourism, maintaining historical landmarks can be far more beneficial than adding generic amenities.

Alternatives to removing the cabin should be considered. The picnic tables, while useful, could be placed in another area that complements our town square’s historical aspect rather than detracting from it. With some thoughtful planning, there’s no reason why our city can’t accommodate both preservation and modern utility.

We urge the city council and local stakeholders to reconsider their decision. By signing this petition, we can show the decision-makers how much this cabin means to us and advocate for its preservation as a vital piece of Lebanon’s history. Let’s come together as a community to protect this landmark from being reduced to a memory. Please sign this petition to save our historic cabin in Lebanon Town Square. Together, we can ensure that its stories and legacy endure for generations to come.
