The Issue

The historic Weatherford House (circa 1910-1920) is located at 193 Canton Street. John and Annie Weatherford ran a dairy farm at the location, at one point drawing enormous attention for their two headed cow. The house is a great example of Folk Victorian style used in the early 1900’s.

In May of 2021, the city council approved Public Hearing Item: CLUP-21-03/Z-21-04/V- 21-09 Hudson Park, to consider a comprehensive land use plan amendment, rezoning and variance to allow a 17-lot single-family detached subdivision on 2.411 acres in the Downtown. This was based upon the condition that:

“The historic Weatherford House shall be saved on the property, restored, and designated under the City’s Historic Preservation Incentive Ordinance.”

On January 31, 2025, the Historic Designation Application was submitted, followed by the subsequent approval on April 17, 2025. Developers again committed to restoring the Weatherford House as part of the project at 193 Canton Street. This was a promise, not only to the historical integrity of our community but also to its residents, who fully expect these words to translate into action.

The applicant is now asking to remove this condition from the zoning approval, and demolish the house, due to a recent engineering report stating that the home is in a compromised condition and there are unsuitable soils beneath it, etc.

This application is currently being considered by City Staff.

Upcoming Meetings will be held on :
October 8th at 6:00PM (Community Zoning Information Meeting) in the Community Room

Monday, November 17th at 6:30 PM (City Council) in the Council Chambers located at City Hall

Please sign this petition to ensure that the legacy of the Weatherford House continues to inspire future generations living in Alpharetta!
