Save the Historic Slifer House from Demolition

Save the Historic Slifer House from Demolition
The Issue
The Slifer House sitting prominently over River Road, Lewisburg, PA, is a cherished piece of Union County’s history. Designed by notable Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan, built in 1861, and also listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975, this iconic home once belonged to Col. Eli Slifer, a prominent Pennsylvania legislator and Civil War-era figure. Over the years, it served as a hospital, orphanage, and museum, preserving the stories of our community’s past. But, now this historic landmark faces an uncertain future.
Asbury RiverWoods, the property’s owner, recently closed the Slifer House Museum and deaccessioned its artifacts, and they have already decided to demolish this well-preserved part of local history unless it is moved. The deadline provided doesn't give us much time to act—in mere months this local treasure could be gone forever unless we move swiftly to save it. The loss of the Slifer House would permanently erase a vital link to Lewisburg’s past, diminish our community’s cultural identity and must be resisted.
We, the undersigned, call on Asbury RiverWoods, the Commissioners of Kelly Township, and the Central Keystone Council of Governments to:
- Halt any plans to demolish the Slifer House and commit to its preservation.
- Explore adaptive reuse options, such as transforming the building into a community center, cultural venue, or educational space, to ensure its vitality for future generations.
- Engage with the community, any helpful historical societies as well as preservation experts, to develop a plan that honors the Slifer House’s historical significance.
The Slifer House is more than a building—it’s a testament to Lewisburg’s resilience and history. Communities across the country, like those who saved landmarks in Asbury Park, NJ, have shown that collective action can protect our heritage. Let’s unite to save the Slifer House and ensure it remains a source of pride for Union County.
Sign this petition today to send a clear message: the Slifer House must be preserved! Share it with friends, family, and neighbors, and join us in attending local meetings to advocate for this historic treasure. Together, we can make a difference.
