SAVE THE HERNDON HOMES

SAVE THE HERNDON HOMES
The Issue
Herndon Homes was completed in 1941, containing 520 units for African Americans. It was demolished in 2010. The project was named for Alonzo F. Herndon, who was born a slave, and through founding the Atlanta Life Insurance Companybecame Atlanta's richest African American.Herndon Homes was a filming location for the motion picture The Lottery Ticket.
On June 15, 2016, Atlanta Housing Authority announced a development team has been selected to create a mixed-use mixed-income community on the site, "Herndon Square". The first of five phases began construction in January 2020,
The problem is many residents from the former Herndon Homes community were left out of the new development out of the original 520 units only approximately 300 units of affordable housing is being put back on site. And 90 of those are for seniors leaving only 200 units for families, Not only is that number far too low for a city in a big housing crisis. The history of the Herndon homes community was erased. The redevelopment plans for the last remaining phases haven’t been fully finalized. This petition is the chance to not only revive a historic deep rooted community in the heart of Atlanta with ideas of art murals, legacy buildings, buildings resembling the former complex and a historic Herndon Home building to teach the physical and historic value of the community that once beat in the heart of the city but to also replace ever unit lost on site 1 for 1 for families. This petition is the start of a new beginning for how Atlanta housing developments are being redeveloped. enough with the culture eraser of the communities that gave Atlanta its name the history that resides in Herndon home and many of the former projects matters. Enough with having Herndon Homes day in a park it’s time to have our community days in our communities. The same ones we struggled in when the city turned its back on the community should be the same ones thriving with the growth in the community as well. Sign this petition as it will be emailed and sent to the heads of the housing authority themselves.
