Petition to Save the Heritage Elm Trees on Risby Street, Ulverstone

To the Central Coast Council,

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the proposed removal of 25 mature elm trees on Risby Street as part of the council’s redevelopment plan. These elm trees, planted just after World War II, hold immense historical, environmental, and community significance.

Their benefits include:

Environmental value: These trees capture carbon, support biodiversity, and provide vital shade, windbreaks, and cooling effects, all critical during a time of climate change.

Historical value: As living reminders of Ulverstone’s history, they contribute to the character and heritage of our town.

Community value: Their beauty enhances the town’s appeal for residents and visitors, making Risby Street one of the most picturesque areas in Ulverstone.

The trees also reduce traffic noise, provide privacy and increase property values.

We understand the importance of urban development, but we believe progress should not come at the cost of destroying irreplaceable natural assets.

Larger cities, such as Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart have successfully managed mature trees alongside infrastructure upgrades by adapting root systems to coexist with drains and footpaths.

We urge the council to:

Reconsider the removal of these elm trees and explore alternatives that integrate them into the redevelopment plan.

Engage environmental and heritage experts to assess the long-term value of these trees and identify solutions to preserve them.

Consult with the community to ensure development plans align with the values of Ulverstone residents.

By signing this petition, we express our commitment to protecting Ulverstone’s natural and historical heritage and call on the council to make sustainable and forward-thinking decisions that balance progress with preservation.

Together, let’s save the Risby Street elm trees for future generations.
