Save the Hawaii Association of the Blind Grant Program — Give Our Keiki a Chance to Thrive
The Issue
The Hawaii Association of the Blind (HAB) program gives blind and visually impaired children the tools they need to live independently, build confidence, and thrive. But funding for this vital program is being denied — putting countless keiki at risk of losing essential support. Please join us in urging decision-makers to restore this grant and keep these life-changing services alive.
My name is Kauanoenokeanuahiahi Ewaliko, and I’m a mother from the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. My 13-year-old daughter, Aubrey, lost her sight at the age of five. Since then, she has faced many challenges with strength, faith, and determination — but she hasn’t done it alone.
The Hawaii Association of the Blind (HAB) program has been a lifeline for her. It provides one-on-one teaching and mentorship outside of school — helping her learn independent living, navigation, and life skills that she can’t always receive in the classroom. Through HAB, she’s gained confidence in moving around safely, learned daily tasks that build independence, and developed a sense of pride in her abilities.
Recently, we were informed that the grant funding that supports this program is being denied. Without it, blind and visually impaired children like my daughter will lose access to the very resources that help them become capable, confident individuals. This decision doesn’t just take away funding — it takes away opportunity, hope, and progress for children who already face immense challenges.
Every child deserves the chance to thrive — to learn, to grow, and to believe in their own potential. This program gives them that chance. We cannot allow these doors to close.
We, the undersigned, are asking for the immediate reconsideration and reinstatement of grant funding for the Hawaii Association of the Blind program. We urge our state and local leaders to stand with Hawaiʻi’s blind community and ensure that these essential services continue for the keiki who depend on them.
Please sign and share this petition to show your support. Together, we can be the voice for those who need it most and keep this program alive for our children — for Aubrey and for every blind and visually impaired keiki in Hawaiʻi.
