Save the ground nesters of NY

Save the ground nesters of NY

The Issue

In alot of ways we've done everything right to conserve the hunting of turkeys for generations to come. We start our season about two weeks to a month later than the birds actually start breeding, the season is brief. Only the month of May, and you can only hunt the birds from sun up to noon, giving lots of time for afternoon breeding and time to pick safe roosting trees and nesting sites. And Trappers and Predator hunters have long seasons to harvest fur bearers who most notoriously raid eggs and eat chick's.

Now as smart and as hard to kill as they birds can be, they are, unfortunately for them, ground nesters. Meaning they make there nest and tend there brood on the ground until such a time the chick's can roost with the hen in the trees. Where we fall short on protecting these beautiful birds isn't in the woods, it's in the field. Often these birds will nest in hay fields, and with farmers constantly pushing forward there first cut, to get the most out of there fields for the growing season, they kills hens on nests, crush nest, and often grind or bale the nests, eggs or animals. I don't think I'm asking for to much to push back the cutting of hay till June 15th minimum. And this isn't just for turkeys, this will save deer fawns, quail, grouse and pheasant, redwing black birds, killdeer and countless other species keep there population healthy for the next generation. If you want more wildlife, sign this, and let's really see what mother nature can do for us.
