Save the goats and other farm animals at Waggon at Hale Pub

The Issue

This is the Waggon at Hale pub, where in their public garden for drinking and eating, there are farm pets, like goats, a pig, chickens and rabbits. The goats and the pig from my first hand experience are the ones in the most crucial condition.

The Waggon at Hale is at ME5 7PP, 179 Capstone Road, Chatham.

The areas are far too small, with no enrichment or grass, nothing to climb and nothing for these animals to do. All during the pub opening hours these animals are kept like this, and are having to cope with all the noise around them from the pub.

The pig has a tiny toddler paddle pool that is full of black disgusting water. The goats have no bedding, or hay, and barely anywhere to stay warm. The pig lays on their own, and the goats pace back and forth in their tiny area and bite at the gate.

Just because these farm animals can ‘survive’, it doesn’t mean they are living quality of life. Every animal deserves to feel the grass, the soil, the mud and live in a quiet, comforting area with lots to do.

I called up The Waggon at Hale, asking them to surrender their animals to The Retreat or another sanctuary.
I also had a phone call with a reporter from Kent Online, and hopefully that does go further.

I was kind to the landlady and gave my options but obviously as I thought, my complaints were not taken well.

She said no to rehoming them, AND said doesn’t ‘agree’ with the way the Retreat works, and wouldn’t give me the reason as to why. The landlady told me what she does for the goats, and how they came from Kent Life and ‘saved from slaughter’, ‘where they lived on concrete’ and that’s why they live on what they do now instead of grass, which is an absolutely stupid excuse. How is that okay, to move an animal from a horrible life to another horrible life? If an animal comes from living on concrete/non grass that doesn’t then give the right to allow that to continue.

She gave me no real justifiable reason why they are living in conditions like this and don’t have a proper living area to keep them happy, this goes for the pig and rabbits too.
May I add that the rabbits and guinea pigs have not been neutered!!

Whatever they do for the animals simply isn’t enough, because look at what they’re living in! It doesn’t matter what they’re fed or how much they are ‘loved’, this is simply not okay for them to be living in, and the enrichment is non existent.

The pig as well is in concerning conditions, and I’ve heard others say about their worries of the rabbits and chickens too.

To help further, contact Maidstone Borough Council or Medway Council about the goats and the pig, they are the most urgent according to their living conditions, the more pressure the council gets the more likely these animals will have to be rescued and taken away.

The RSPCA at this point are useless, they have both already been there multiple times and deemed no problem. Of course, we all know that the RSPCA have their own problems.
And a sanctuary has no legal action to take them away.

Many are upset by this situation on the local Medway community on Facebook.

What we need to all focus on is putting in reports to Maidstone Borough Council or Medway Council or the local MP, that’s our best bet, and stories on Kent Online too. And of course, signing this petition!
Let’s save these poor lives, there are so many sanctuaries who could take them. If you are local, boycott the pub. If we give enough pressure, they will surrender these animals to a sanctuary, I am sure.
