Save the Georgetown College Golf Program

Save the Georgetown College Golf Program
The Issue
Recently the Georgetown College Athletics department made the decision to cut the men’s and women’s varsity golf program along with other JV programs. This program is too valuable to lose. Many golf alumni recall their best memories of being a student to be golf related. Please don’t let future student athletes be deprived of this wonderful experience.
This program has produced countless athletes that have gone on to make an impact in the golf world. Alumnus Christian Heavens, ‘11 just recently won the St. Louis Publinix Open professional division. He was offered a scholarship to Georgetown College, where he earned Honorable Mention All-American Honors and qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship. Christian has also been featured on NBC’s “Big Break Myrtle Beach” and ABC’s “Holey Moley”. Alumnus Drake Stepter ‘15 has gone on to have multiple successes in amateur tour events and continues to pursue golf greatness. This program has also produced numerous professionals in healthcare, business, and accounting.
GC men’s and women’s team have had multiple interns, staff members, and a current intern for Golf House Kentucky, which is the host for the PGA of Kentucky Junior Golf Summer Tournament Series. This summer tournament series travels the state of Kentucky every summer giving opportunities for youth golfers of all ages to play. It is the most prestigious tournament series in the state of Kentucky.
Alumni have also been interns for BD Global which hosts Korn Ferry Tour events. Alumni have held staff and volunteer positions at multiple PGA Tournament events including the Barbasol Tournament, 2009 Senior PGA Tournament at Valhalla, and the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla.
Our staff, current players, and former players have worked at golf courses across the state and country including Cherry Blossom Golf Club, Longview Golf Club, Shelbyville Country Club, Danville Country Club, Hurstbourne Country Club, Bellefonte Country Club, Valhalla Golf Club, Big Spring Country Club, Harmony Landing Country Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club.
This program has gone on for over two decades and has had an impact on Kentucky Golf. The players on these teams past and present have proudly worn the Orange and Black and represented Georgetown College in the best ways possible. These teams have held the Top Team GPAs multiple times. These teams have performed countless hours of community service in both Scott and Fayette Counties. These members have gone on to recruit new student athletes with their testimonies as to how impactful being a Georgetown golfer really is.
“My heart truly hurts for the current members of the team and the many other alumni affected by this decision. GC Golf provided me the confidence to grow, leadership skills, and cultivated some of the most amazing friendships I’ve had throughout my life so far... They believed in me on and off the course. It wasn’t just about golf, but the support and memories. It was about the values the game taught me and how those values molded me." - Deanna Johnson
“In my time at Georgetown I enjoyed many things at the school, however being apart of the golf team was always my favorite. Without it I would not have met some of my closest friends and through the game I would not be the person I am today. I am ashamed of the administration and blame them entirely for the short sided and careless leadership that has allowed this to happen. I fully believe that a golf team is a valuable asset to a athletic program and to think that the future students of Georgetown will not have the ability to share in the experiences and moments that I had is sickening.” -Patrick Oakley
"Some of the best times of my life were as a player and coach for the Georgetown college women's golf team. This program was established to build good, honest people on and off the competitive field. As coach I held the players to high standards of honesty, kindness to competitors, and classroom excellence. For over two decades this program has produced strong and respectful individuals who represent the college well. To cut this program in the hasty manner it was is wrong." - Marlene Schulte
