Save the "George Street Cats" mural

Save the "George Street Cats" mural
The issue
For over three decades, the George Street Cats Mural (beneath the highway overbridge, near Bank Street) has been a beloved fixture of the Dunedin landscape.
This original public art was designed by the late artist, Connie Fechner, and painted in 1989 by 4th Form (year 10) students of Otago Girls' High School, under the eye of art teacher, Miss Marriot.
The bright mural continues to bring joy and a sense of historical connection to the community. As a member of that community, I'm attached to this simple, delightful depiction of cats and flowers.
The mural seems to be in fairly good condition and presents a vivid outdoors gallery that has no need for "fixing." Yet, plans are underway to paint over it with a new mural, disregarding its history, the affection we hold for it, and the clear alternatives that exist. It's feasible to paint an additional mural above the cats or find another location where community art does not already exist.
Conserving local cultural landmarks is essential, as they define our collective memories. This extends to street art, which enhances our urban environment and plays a vital role in reflecting local culture and creativity. Let's stand up for our beloved cat mural, celebrate this memorable piece of street art, and leave it in place for future generations to enjoy.
Please join me in urging the relevant authorities and artists involved to reconsider their decision.
