Save the Geese at Garvin. STOP Parks Dept from killing baby geese!
The Issue
In October 2022 the Parks Dept announced plans to destroy the eggs of Canada geese at Garvin Park in Evansville IN. Why? Because they poop on the sidewalk in the park next to the lake! They are doing what they are supposed to do. They live there. It’s their job to eat plankin and grass and digest it. Yet people complained so they are going to kill babies.
When Canada Geese mate they mate for life. Their babies stay with their parents for 2 years. Parents are extremely protective of their young. Moms will chirp and whistle to their babies in the eggs so the babies know the sound of their voice when they are born. And if you listen carefully you can hear the babies chirping back. And the adults mourn hard when eggs are destroyed or don’t hatch.
Goslings will feast on small insects like mosquitos too. This means they are killing off our natural mosquito fighters. So expect an increase in mosquitos at the park this year too.
The problem isn’t the geese. They fly in and out of the park. So killing them wont stop the problem. The problem is lack of cleanup. Most of the time rain washes the poop away. But when it’s doesn’t rain it piles up. If the parks department would wash away sidewalks when it is dry then there would be no problem.
The other problem is people feed the geese and ducks next to the water on the sidewalks. The park benches are along the sidewalks and people will sit there and feed them. So they gather in numbers. They aren’t stupid. They know humans feed at Garvin Park. So when they want a treat they will fly to Garvin Park.
If the Parks Dept wants to help they would ask people to stop feeding them. Because while you only feed them a handful of food there are hundreds of other people visiting every day day that are doing the same. They will not keep coming back if no extra food is available. In fact if food is scarce they will leave and find food elsewhere.
These birds are amazing creatures. And deserve happiness. Please help us raise awareness. The Parks Dept has plans to shake eggs and put oil on them this spring. That will not kill all of them. In fact we expect to have more deformed and damaged geese this year because of their actions. Please help the Garvin Foundation share the message and stop the murder and damage of animals that are just trying to survive.
We need to get this message out fast as they have already begun laying eggs. Please help Th Garvin Foundation stop this.
