The Issue

The Town Of Brunswick is planning to build the updated municipal fueling station on the current site of the Senior Gardens on Industry Road! The town needs to improve the Public Works facilities. And as it stands, the expansion project poses significant concerns for our Town and for all those who love the Senior Gardens and the Water Street access to the Androscoggin River.

The Build a Better Brunswick Coalition, a group of concerned residents, businesses, and organizations, is therefore urging the Brunswick Town Council to halt and reconsider the Ordinance Authorizing Phase 1a of this project.

We are advocating for a solution that meets our town's operational needs and protects public safety, public health, and recreation. We believe that with community input and a thoughtful review, we can develop a more balanced plan. This plan should preserve our community assets while ensuring safety and sustainability for all Brunswick residents. The Androscoggin River is one of our most prized assets, and its protection should be a priority.

The key points about the project are here:

  1. The Town of Brunswick is planning to re-build the municipal gasoline and diesel fueling station on the plot of land where the Town's only  Town owned community garden currently exists, displacing gardeners permanently with no stated plan to replace the resource.
  2. The fueling station will be within 100 feet of Family Focus, the adjacent day care center. This will impact the air quality and affecting the children who breathe it daily.
  3. By making this investment, the Town is committing to decades of increased industrial use along Water Street and the Androscoggin River. The town states that the current project will not change traffic flow, but the future phases of the project would increase heavy vehicle traffic due to the desire to build a maintenance garage for municipal vehicles from plows, fire trucks, and fuel deliveries. This traffic will share the Town's East Coast Greenway corridor heavily trafficked by pedestrians and cyclists. This increases the risk for accidents and endangers public safety, all without an apparent plan to invest in infrastructure to address these public safety issues.
  4. The Water Street corridor also connects our vibrant downtown area with the beautiful Androscoggin River, a jewel of our community that deserves protection and respect.

Public Works clearly needs better facilities. However, as the existing location has been in place for many decades, we should ensure that the location and construction of the new facilities positions us well for the next 50+ years. Assuming growth rates slightly lower than recent trends, Brunswick could have the population of Portland by then and it's not clear that Industry Rd and its connection via Water St will support that. When we built a new building for the Police Department, we had a Task Force to guide that process. When we built a new building for the Fire Department, we did the same. We need a collaborative Task Force process including the community which can evaluate current and projected needs, possible locations, and how to meet those needs with a forward-looking approach. Last night, June 15th, Council leadership announced that they're planning to create a task force, but at the moment it seems very limited in scope. While I am only a single councilwoman, I pledge to advocate and work towards solutions that are truly responsive to the overwhelming community feedback I've received from my constituents. Thank you, Ramona Thieme District 6 Councilor Brunswick Town Council [Note: The Change.org Community Connection Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
